2024 Recycling Schedule

2024 COLLECTION DATES

Oil, antifreeze and lead acid batteries -

Town Garage – 9am-11am - FIRST SAT. EACH MONTH EXCEPT October (due to the Harwinton Fair)  October's date is the second Saturday of the month 

    MAY 4, OCT 12, SCRAP METAL – Town Garage 8am - noon.

                CLEAN METAL ONLY! (remove all non-metal parts from items)

                                Remove webbing from aluminum chairs

                                Remove plastic parts and bicycle tires

                                Drain fluids & fuels COMPLETELY from lawnmowers, etc.

                                Stoves & microwaves acceptable

                                APPLIANCES WITH FREON accepted. $20/ appliance, payable at gate                                

Unacceptable items:  fuel tanks of any kind, including gas cans (take to HHW collection days); fire extinguishers or cylinders of any kind, including propane; ammunition (contact State Police); fluorescent light and ballasts (take to HHW or Home Depot Service Desk)

 

MAY 4 , & OCT 12 BULKY WASTE  - Town Garage 8am - noon. (All fees collected at the gate)

  1. INDIVIDUAL ITEMS ONLY. No loads of loose debris!

$0 each piece – mattress /box springs (only clean dry mattresses are no charge)

                                $15 each – upholstered chair, sofa, large rug, tub, shower stall

                                $10 each – wooden chair, skid/pallet, rugs smaller than 9x12, toilet, sink,

                                        bureau, desk, vacuum cleaner

  1. TIRES – only the following sizes accepted:

                                $8 each – (up to 18”) passenger, motorcycle, lawn & garden tractors

                                $10 each – (18.5” – 20”) small truck/SUV tires

 

MARCH 2, MAY 4, AUGUST 3, & OCTOBER 12 - ELECTRONICS COLLECTIONS  – Town Garage: (8am – noon).

All electronic “plug ins” are acceptable, such as computers, monitors, printers, cell phones, copiers, TV’s, VCR’s, radios, faxes, stereos, plug in phones, microwave ovens, small plug-in appliances (toasters, etc.) DO NOT BRING ITEMS WITH FREON TO ELECTRONICS RECYCLING.  PLEASE NOTE:DO NOT RECYCLE  ELECTRONICS CURBSIDE! YOUR HAULER CANNOT ACCEPT THEM AND WILL BE FINED! INSTEAD, BRING THEM TO AN ELECTRONICS COLLECTION.

SHRED -IT DAY - MAY 11th and September 28th- 9:00 AM - 12:00 NOON AT THE TOWN HALL - THERE IS A LIMIT OF 3 FILES SIZED BOXES.

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION – There will be 2 collections.  One will be June 8th in Falls Village, CT.  the second will be October 19th in Torrington.  Registration is required and will be posted on the Recycling page when registration opens.  This event is sponsored by the NWHCOG. 

NO latex paints, waste oil, antifreeze, vehicle batteries, rechargeable batteries, medication. Call me for disposal information of these items.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR

Earth Day is April 22 – Good family project (year round): FOCUS on RE- USE. Keep as much as possible out of the landfill by buying carefully so there is minimum waste, use up what you have, share what you can.  Consider Composting your grass clippings, fruit & vegetable scraps, coffee ground, cut flowers, shredded newspaper and office paper, paper bags and used paper towels (these are just a few items that can go into a compost.  For more information check out our website under Composting!  “Use it up, share it, recycle it……..For Earth’s Sake!”

REMINDER: oil based and latex paints can now be recycled through Paint Care. Take your paints to the nearest retail establishment that participates in the program. Sherwin –Williams is closest to Harwinton. Call first for instructions (860-482-5086). Log on to www.paintcare.org for details.
