The local Fire Marshal is responsible for various important duties. The principal function is to direct and supervise all provisions of the Connecticut Fire Safety Code as is relates to the Town of Harwinton’s building and structures.

Fire Marshal duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Investigate any fire or explosion within the Town of Harwinton
  • Report all fire and fire department responses to the State Fire Marshal
  • Inspect all public buildings and facilities regulated by the Connecticut State Fire Code annually
  • Enforce regulations on flammable or combustible liquids
  • Report leaks or discharge of flammable or combustible liquids
  • Inspect and enforce regulations on liquefied petroleum gas, and report leaks or discharge of liquefied petroleum gas
  • Regulate concerns on hazardous chemicals as referenced in the Code of Federal Regulation Title 49, Parts 100 through 199 and 386 through 397
  • Issue blasting permits
  • Inspect and regulate all fireworks and special effects displays
  • Coordinate information and activities between Harwinton Emergency Sevices and the community
  • Act as a resource for mitigation of hazardous material incidents with the Town
  • Registers burglar alarms (forms located in First Selectman’s office at Town Hall)
  • Other various inspections as needed
