It Pays to Recycle

Did you know —– you are paying two separate charges for trash removal? The first charge comes from the hauler. It is for the service that is provided by your hauler to remove the trash from your curb. The second charge comes from the town’s tax base. It is the payment to MIRA, the Recovery Facility in Hartford that burns refuse in the trash to energy plant. Then, that ash needs to be diposed of aa well.  All refuse cannot be burned and that also need to be transported for disposal.  All of this is not free.  Beginning July 1, 2018, the “tip fee” our town will pay to MIRA to accept our garbage will be $72/ ton. It will add up to approximately $110,000 over a one year period.   There is no charge for processing recyclables.  

  • Doesn’t it make sense to RECYCLE as MUCH AS POSSIBLE curbside so that the Town of Harwinton PAYS OUT LESS from the tax base as a result of lowering the tonnagec fees for refuse?
  • PLEASE RECYCLE EVERYTHING THAT YOU CAN! CURBSIDE RECYCLING IS NOT AN OPTION – IT’S THE LAW! Please call me if you have questions.

Buy carefully to minimize waste – share it – use it up – recycle it – FOR EARTH SAKE! ( and your wallet will thank you!)
